its probably that you dont have the amount of ram needed because things on ram usually move to swap when they are not being used or there is too much stuff on ram.......also sence it blender 2.4x id recomend trying 2.5x which you would have to use this ppa ppa:cheleb/blender-svn , download from blender.org , or get a build from graphicall.org
