Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pango-graphite

Installing pango-graphite causes gdm and applications using it unusable.
Symptoms:

1. Login window (gdm), namely toolbar at the bottom (showing the time)
and user selector do not show up. The background is visible, however;
the "drum" sound is also audible. The mouse pointer is visible. After
that, no interaction is perceivable. The only solution is to switch to a
virtual console (Ctrl+Alt+F1).

2. The first symptom was an unusable authentication window during
screensave; namely, none showed up. The mouse pointer was visible and
interacted normally, but otherwise, the authentication "window" doesn't
show up.

The only solution to this problem was removing the pango-graphite
package.
