I had a similar problem which made me at first unable to enter the Ubuntu session. It was caused by my right shift key had not correctly been recognised as released. Maybe because of at the moment heavy loaded CPU, missed interrupt.
Steps I used: 1) Leave message 2) Enter password (or all keys that is included) 3) Press all kinds of keys (i.e. shift, ctrl) until it is correctly shown. 4) Press Cancel to don't leave the message.
