I get this problem too and its DAMN annoying!! I keep missing important messages from my boss at work because of this! I'm not sure how reproduce it but I think its whenever I lose internet connectivity (due to suspend/resume etc) and it supposedly "reconnects". People see my online and send messages but I do not receive them.
