I don't see any status update here, but I just received a package update for VirtualBox (4.0.4-dfsg-1ubuntu4), and it looks like the menu is back!
The problem seems to remain, however, as menu failed to appear after I had full screened the Guest OS window and then reverted back to normal size. No menu showed up then.
