Looks like printing the original PDF to a new PDF using printer 
CUPS/postscript-color-printer-rev4 triggered another bug.
A few seconds after printing, the harddisk is becoming heavily used, the load 
goes up, but the CPU usage stays down due to swapping.
Switching to the console and killing the /usr/bin/gs process stopped the 
swapping.

Anyway, your next suggestion, printing the original PDF with lp.
The problem remains with lp, the pages are mostly filled with black areas. I 
attached a scan of the printed page.

The used laser printer is an CUPS/Optra-S-1250
