Upon recommendation I have installed the xorg-edgers drivers in the hope that, maybe, the issue has been addressed in the next releases of Mesa. Unfortunately, it didn't improve the situation. At this point a bug has been reported to the driver developers: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=36332 I am still using the ATI X1950 on my system and I will continue searching for a solution to this problem. Please, keep reporting here if you have more information about the problem.
