@Ernst: You're saying that you saw the behavior regress in maverick when
you did updates, correct? You don't happen to know the kernel versions
before and after the update, do you?

Suspiciously, there's a patch dealing specifically with EDID handling on
Intel graphics that would have first gone out in maverick in that
general time frame. It's was first released upstream in 2.6.37-rc8.
