Somehow I managed to make it work. I have no idea how but I was trying
different things for the last 4 hours. Last time I remember was making
two changes:

1.) in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf added line
options snd-hda-intel model=6stack-dig

2.) installed gnome-alsamixer and checked IEC958 Default PCM (it seems
suddenly selecting IEC958 is not enough, but that's what mixer applets
offers)

There should be either same defaults as with previous releases or
sound/mixer applets should have options that doesn't seem to exist in
installed ones.
