It seems to me like that workaround would work equally well in 11.04.

You can also modify /usr/share/alsa/cards/ICE1712.conf to output to both
1&2 and 3&4 simultaneously by inserting ttable entries, should be
something like:

        ttable.0.2 1
        ttable.1.3 1

...next to the other ttable entries in the definition you want to
modify.
