I am not saying that automatic placement should be mandatory. If you want to place icons by hand, be my guest. However, I have other things I'd rather be doing. I think that icon handling on the desktop is something that Microsoft has done really well. Obviously, the icon previews and icon resizing is something that a lot of Nautilus users are delighted with. I like the image previews, too. I just don't want to drag icons around to position them on the desktop.
