I get back the text console by doing the following: 1) Blacklist nouveau 2) Rename "/lib/modules/2.6.38-8-generic/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/nouveau/nouveau.ko" to something else. 3) sudo update-initramfs -k all -u 4) sudo update-grub2 5) Reboot.
