Two more details: - Examining Radu's patch I see it is actually only to the vmware-config.pl, not to the Linux kernel (phew!!) - Thunderbird does actually startup, but it quits in 11 seconds, which made registering for launchpad a challenge and has effectively locked down my email communication to the outside world.
