Actually I don't think there's a way to detect whether the feature is
enabled or not at runtime, which means it would require a distro-
specific patch to do the work at compile time. That sucks. This feature
is generating a lot of trouble with a *lot* of programs, even well
maintained ones, because people are assuming "Gnome 2 = no grip".
