Смирнов Александр Валериянович - upstream this this may be an error in mesa (a missed write). He has recently reimplemented how this chunk of code behaves in the upstream version of mesa.
Would you mind testing ppa:xorg-edgers which has a snapshot of the development version of mesa. This will help identify if Chris Wilson's recent changes solve this bug and may be worth backporting for natty.
