We installed using the natty installer to an external harddrive via usb.
The internal harddrive was /dev/sda, the installer flash drive was
/dev/hdb and the target install drive via usb was /dev/sdc

The installer asked us which drive to install grub to and we selected
/dev/sdc (the default was sda which is wrong too) when the installer had
finished it had installed to sda anyway. sdc contains no grub and we
have installed grub manually and repaired the internal hard drive (which
no longer boots thanks to it looking for a drive which isn't plugged in)
