I do not understand the problem you describe here. I have no trouble installing grub on a fakeraid. Also you do NOT want grub to install to /dev/sda, you want it to install to the /dev/mapper device. Of course, grub assumes that hd0 is /dev/sda, so to install it you do need to edit device.map to point it to the correct mapper device instead.
