I have this problem too.  When I play a video using democracyplayer,
usually I can't hear any audio, but the video looks OK.  But if I play
the downloaded file with Totem, the movie plays just fine.  I did my
testing after moving the .democracy folder out of the way, as requested
by Chris Halse Rogers.  I have captured the stderr output of this
process, which gives us a clue: it doesn't know how to handle the audio
stream of type "audio/mpeg".  Hope this is useful.

My version of democracyplayer is exactly the same as Chris's, and I'm
also using Ubuntu Feisty on AMD64.
