+ I experienced this problems sistematically after installing ubuntu (feisty)
on my machine. It has been 3 months I have been trying to install ubuntu
(feisty) and debian (etch) on my machine and I always had the following problem
after the installation.
I will report from my last tentative installation.

  The machine is a:
  CPU: AMD Athlon X2 4200 AM2
MB: ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe (tried with all bios up to 1001-beta)
  RAM: 1Gb x2 (DDR2-667 PC2-5400)
  HD: SEAGATE 400Gb 7200.10 -SATA2 16Mb 8.5ms

I have run over two nights tests for the HD from the SEGATE home page and
memetests from ubuntu finding NO hardware problems.
The problem happens (everytime) I after I install ubuntu feisty. In
particular, the installation goes fine ( I tried almost all versions up to the
daily build of 14 April 2007) and all hardware is correctly functional. If I
download many data via apt or by many parallel scp (to copy the data from my
old pc) the filesystem goes in read-only mode and when I reboot fsck fails and
is not able to recover (even manually).
  Here is the dmesg output:
