Finished installing from the alternate cd, that worked (since it's just the debian installer, I wouldn't expect otherwise).
After reboot, the system still locks up right after starting X. The colors are wrong as well. I upgraded the kernel to the current mainline one (that I've been running on my other quad), and that boots happily. Colors are still off on the login screen though, I will compare X configs shortly. (Yay for firewire target mode.
