Yes, this has continued to be a problem ever since Dapper work started. Warty and Breezy worked wonderfully for me but Dapper and now Edgy continue to fail. It's related, I believe, to ATI cards... though again, xscreensaver worked perfectly with it, and gnome-screensaver does not, and like this one user suggested, I can launch it manually and it runs fine.
