I am affected by the same issue. Though I am running Compiz. I will
add that killing applications over SSH, killing Compiz, or restarting
GDM with `sudo restart gdm` generally has no visible effect. Though
once killing VirtualBox brought my machine back to life for a few
seconds.

It may be a coincidence, but I first noticed a freeze after installing
Chrome 11 beta, which employs more GPU acceleration than previous
versions of Chrome. I wondered if I am running out of video memory -
but I don't know how to check my video memory usage.
