** Description changed:

For every version of Ubuntu from 5.04 through to current Feisty, sound
on my Toshiba Satellite SA-50 has been intermittent -- by which I mean
it works for a few weeks, then stops working for several months, then
starts working for another few weeks, and so on. I've been upgrading
  regularly.
+
+ Possibly related: Whenever I insert an audio CD, I get the error message
+ "The currently selected audio profile is not available on your
+ installation". The message is incorrect, as the list of GNOME audio
+ profiles is empty.

  tail -2 /proc/asound/oss/sndstat:

cat: /etc/asound.conf: No such file or directory
cat: /home/mpt/.asoundrc*: No such file or directory
