Did you ask mdadm to use the ddf metadata format at any point? If you
did, and later recreated the array with the native 1.2 format, that
would explain why the ddf signatures are still there.

Yes, it appears to have both types of metadata and only one should be
present.

It is not depreciated; support for it is new to mdadm. It didn't have
support for it in maverick. Hrm. Could you also post the output of
mdadm -E /dev/sdc /dev/sdc1?
