@david: Ok. I've upgraded to natty and re-tested. Log attached. On first test I got no sound, but then I installed alsa-tools-gui and used envy24control to increase the volume of the first two channels (basically as you suggest to mike in your previous post), and then it works properly. Ditto for recording.
