I think like our fellow zigi... The user should have the option to mount the remote path when the program that don't support SMB:// KIO SLAVES functionality accesses it... It could be done either via that program or via a file manager like Dolphin or Konqueror...
Another info that I received is that VLC can't support KIO SLAVES and will never support it because it needs some specific HTTP protocol access that don't work on KIO SLAVES...
