As per comment 15 I applied the patch then did make clean, then ./configure; make dep; make. Did not do "make dep" before the patch (except that I did it before my previous make). This was as per http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Developing_On_Linux_Under_Windows#Modifying_Audacity which I understand to be Richard's advice, but sounds like we should follow your suggestion too.
