I rebooted and installed symbol files and setup a script to get a
backtrace from gnome-panel.

The problem just reoccurred, but I did't manage to attach to the running
gnome-panel to make a backtrace. Attaching makes gdb hang.

The main symptom is the same as before: the gnome-panel is unresponsive. The
applets in the panel are still working: workspace switcher, skype, network
connection status, desktop sharing, displays, bluetooth, volume, indicator
applet, clock applet, indicator applet session. What is not working, are
shortcut icons, start/applications/places/system menus.
What is half working the windows list: it is garbled, not updated when
switching workspaces, but clicking on the non-visible items still has the same
effect.

But this time, the gnome-panel sleeps, and just nautilus is in uninterruptible
sleep state.

something like this also hangs:
...
/bin/ls --color=auto
...
while a normal /bin/ls works as expected.

attaching to such a hanging ls or to the nautilus also hangs gdb.

The same kernel message as before occur, but now just for nautilus.
