Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

I think the network-manager package should recommend the ppp package but
not depend on it.

Basically, most home devices provide a Wireless or Ethernet link to the
modem. Thus the ppp connection is never used by the system. On older
hardware, it could help to be able to uninstall ppp.
