a user on the ubuntuforum found a workaround that eliminated the long boot
time. the suggestion was to turn sata compatibility off. it seems to work.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1497461&highlight=toshiba+nb305

i have not tested the suggestion on how to make suspend and hibernate
work. i could never get it to work, so i set the computer to shut down,
which seems to work.
