Hi I am a linux newbie, my system is On Maverick Meerkat 10.10, I have
it dual booted with Windows Vista (which I hate having to boot into!),
but this is what I've found, all DVD's + and - work perfectly under
Vista, so certainly not a hardware problem.

I first couldn't read DVD-R's applications like brasero failed to
recognise that a DVD was in the drive.

However when I checked System->Administration->Disk Utility this showed
that a DVD was mounted, to my surprise when I clicked unmount,
everything worked, Brasero included. I don't know enough about Linux to
know what that means, but I hope it helps one of you guys figure out the
problem.
