Indeed, openSuse 11.4 works for me too, with kernel 2.6.37 on it.

This makes the search for the bug a bit harder. Not only do we not know
exactly what hardware causes the behavior (I can't find a common component
between all the laptops listed above) but also the packet which causes it.

I'm downloading Debian live to see if it will boot. I suggest others do the
same, to see if this is an upstream issue.
