I believe it's very likely not what makes nm-applet not show up in your case. I've been testing against a recent dbusmenu and do get the error, although nm-applet shows in all possible scenarios (unity, gnome-panel w/ indicator, gnome-panel w/notification area). Please make sure you have the indicator-applet installed in your panel if you run in Classic Gnome session, or that indicator-application is running if you're running in Unity.
