Wow, thanks for all the additional testing.

This suggests there is some other plumbing-layer component that changed
between A2 and A3 which causes the increased memory when nvidia is
loaded.  That actually makes a bit more sense, because it is a little
hard to imagine how -nvidia by itself could increase memory usage of
everything else in the system (I can sort of imagine it increasing
memory loads for GUI apps, but even that is a bit weird.)
