Automatic connection or not, available to all users or not, it really
shouldn't make a difference for which device gets the default gateway.
Confirming if only because I know it shouldn't happen under any case.

However, we don't really have enough information to tell what's going on
exactly.

If possible, could you try to reproduce the issue, and then wireless is
enabled and gets the default gateway, but wired is also connected,
please get the output from the following commands:

ip route list
ethtool eth0

This may require installing the 'ethtool' package.
