I have successfully installed emacs23 on a 10.04 and a 11.04 desktop
machine; it's only on the server that I can't install any emacs. It's
reproducible in the sense that I've purged all emacs packages and tried
several times, each time the error occurs.

All Emacs packages have been purged:

$ sudo dpkg -S /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/global
global: /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/global

$ fgrep -r site-lisp/global /var/lib/dpkg/info
/var/lib/dpkg/info/global.list:/usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/global
/var/lib/dpkg/info/global.list:/usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/global/gtags.el
/var/lib/dpkg/info/global.md5sums:324f4cb278906b5a502745fa93a3e526
usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/global/gtags.el

$ ls -l /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/global
ls: cannot access /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/global: No such file or directory

Install emacs23-nox and then ran these commands again: same output.

There is no folder /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/global

There is folder /usr/share/emacs/23.1/site-lisp/global
