I am beginning to think that the problem is cause by the splashscreen inserted by (K)ubuntu when turning off the computer. Ending X session works normally (as opposed to what I reported above) The problem occurs when (K)ubuntu tries to show a splash screen. Booting with option nosplash solves the problem
