Public bug reported: Binary package hint: metacity
If not all open windows are un-minimized (i.e. if some are minimized), and if the last use of the show desktop function (whether initiated through/by the panel button or Mod4/Super/Win + d) was to minimize windows, the aforementioned minimized windows will be maximized, and the desktop will not be shown. I am almost certain this is not intended behavior, which would entail minimizing all windows if any are un-minimized, regardless of the previous use of the show desktop function. I'm not sure if this is related to GNOME or metacity (also asked it #ubuntu-bugs), but I'm going with metacity.
