Found a posting on Ubuntuforums (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=2428352) and I can now retrieve photo's from my camera after editing /etc/udev/rules.d/45-libgphoto2.rules
However the transfers are still extremely slow with lot's of transfer stall messages.
