I am finding the same issue on HP DV6245US laptop. I will get lines, color bars, and sometimes the screen will start to fade to white. This floating of white seems like it could damage the screen. I am currently running Feisty Beta with all of the updates installed. This also happened to with Edgy.
The only work around that I have found was to disable the splash screen by changing the "splash" kernel boot parameter to "nosplash" in my /boot/grub/menu.lst file.
