I have the same problem, totem sometimes crashes when changing volume. This does not seem to depend on file type played - I've got this error with mp3, avi, wma and others. Also, similar problem appears in Rhythmbox, as described in Bug #517310. I've installed all -dbg files necessary and attach crash trace here.
