Hi Andy, I just checked the kernel you suggest: 2.6.38-4.31 on the ProBook 6550b.
With this kernel the machine is able to recover successfully from suspend. I tested hibernate behavior as well, and it also works fine. So this kernel appears to have solved the issue.
