Hi jeffrey, you must definetly check on yr wrongly setup sources-list. There must have something gone completly wrong on the upgrade. This might have been due to several sources. You do not need to try Maverick, picking the Choice with LTS is pretty fine. In case an upgrade fails I would always rather recommend to make a clean install. Thus I this mark this bug as invald - since causes can not be clearly associated to VirtualBox.
