I am also having this problem, trying to connect an old iPod with Firewire. I transferred my Firewire card to my new computer, which is running 10.10, but the above bug has shown up. It worked fine under most previous versions of Ubuntu, although I can't say for certain whether I ever used it with 9.10, which is the latest I have installed on my old computer.
