I have a work around which is to wait until the disk goes idle and remove the metadata directory on ~/.local/share and pkill the metadata process. I will leave it to an engineer as to whether this bug can be closed, as this does not yet explain how or why the metadata gets corrupted and causes the gvfsd-metadata process to peg the CPU.
