Could not reproduce this problem in Ubuntu 10.10, LibreOffice Calc at
the Terminal:

localc -nologo

Cell A1 type 1 -> cell A2 type 2 -> cell B1 type 1 -> cell B2 type 2 ->
highlighted A1 through B2 -> click Format -> Merge Cells -> Merge Cells
-> Yes button -> Edit -> Delete Cells... -> Delete entire row(s) radio
button -> OK button

the cells were instantly deleted.
