Aparently ubuntu 10.10 makes this feature request much less urgent. In Ubuntu 10.10, a huawei moedem with SIM card is recognised by the network manager as mobile broadband connection, and entering the right phone number (which is "*99#" for the danish HI3G carrier) and the right APN (acces point name), things just works out of the box.
