You should try VirtualBox 4.0.2 - Currently it can only to be downloaded from VirtualBox.org Looks as 3.1.6 can' handle XServer 1.9 which is present in Maverick. (thanks 4 the picture) On a bug-update from VirtualBox.org there is also available a new Version of Guest-Additions V.4.0.3-69551, with reference to http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/8122
Before installing these Guest-Additions within the Guest just move the downloaded file to /usr/share/virtualbox/ or define the location via vboxmgr (the programm-surface) A one should really ask to have virtualbox-4.0.2-Ose backported to Maverick.
