Sorry but to be honest I get annoyed at not having sound through my speakers so I ended up reformatting it and sound works again. It did work from a live-cd as well (Live-CD being a USB stick). Some things I did notice while tampering with it was that it didn't matter what Connector I changed it to under the Sound options. Wether is was Analog Speakers, Analog Output or Analog Headphones, it didn't seem to make a difference. I also had been playing with the alsamixer while poking around with the Sound Preferences which gave some very wild results. When I selected the Connector to Analog Speakers the volume setting for the Headphones was maxed as well as the Speaker volume, now when I told it to mute the Headphone volume it muted the Headphone volume as well as muted the Master volume settings (listed on both the Alsamixer and in the sound icon in the top right) even though it was the Headphone option I told it to mute (the Speaker volume setting was maxed the whole time and wasn't effected by either the Headphones or Master volume settings being muted). By choosing either Analog Output or Analog Headphones the Speaker channel had been automatically muted for these and turning it to max volume and un-muting it never helped the situation. Another thing I noticed was if I muted the Headphone volume, unmuted the Master volume control then left Alsamixer, went back into Alsamixer the Headphones had been restored to full volume again and unmuted. Sorry I can't help any more then this.
