T61 2.6.35-25-generic 64-bit kernel. Rebooted this morning after some updates and had this exact same problem. Machine was very sluggish with events/0 or events/1 using the CPU every couple seconds. eth0 was not available. ifconfig eth0 down immediately fixed the problem but I use eth0 so not a good solution. The battery trick worked for me.
